claddagh painting

 

I’ve always been fascinated by the traditional Irish Claddagh ring, with two hearts clasping a heart and surmounted with a crown. The expression which was associated with these symbols in the giving of the ring was: “With my hands I give you my heart, and crown it with my love.”

This Christmas I decided to paint the symbols that formed that ring, as a gift to myself, and a gift to all of you.

For there is no greater gift than love.

    I’ve ALWAYS wanted that ring! So stupid of me not to know about earlier when I could actually get this in the UK :( And now I can’t find it anymore. Sigh.

    My cousin has been wearing this ring for years now. She said that, according to folk tales, if you were to wear the ring with the apex of the heart pointing outwards (and the crown towards you), it means that you’re single and available (your heart is available to others), and you’re king of you (with the crown inwards).

    If you’re in a relationship, you wear the ring the other way round, indicating that your heart’s already been taken. Dunno how far that’s true, but I think the sentiment’s sweet.

    Wishing you happiness and love. I suppose you meant the love that doesn’t have to be from romantic relationship. Agape is a form of love too.
