table for two, three, four?

I finally have a dining table! For the past few weeks I’ve been eating off one of those breakfast-in-bed trays by setting it up on the floor, or just holding my bowl up while on the sofa. After some shopping around and kinda fed up with dining on the floor, I bought myself a 5-piece dining set from Freedom Furniture.
I must admit though, whilst their furniture look a little more classy than Ikea’s, the assembly is not as friendly (some of the holes not drilled thorough enough), or as solid in material. Too bad I chose aesthetics over functionality this time around. Well, what’s more important is, I have a table to eat on! Yay!
And now for my second part of the post…
I was tagged both by velverse and Giddy Tiger on what my favourite food is in my state or country. Well, even though I’m far away from my KL home, nothing’s like eating old-fashioned roti bakar right here in my Sydney apartment! For those who aren’t familiar with the term, it’s actually butter and kaya (or coconut jam) on toast bread.

The authentic roti bakar is made by spreading a thick layer of butter and kaya on thick Hainanese-style bread, then toasting it in a small toaster oven for a few minutes till golden brown. Since I don’t have one of those handy ovens, I just pop a couple of white bread slices into the normal bread toaster, get it nice and crisp, spread as much butter and jam on it as I like (make sure it’s oozing!), and take a big, BIG bite… yummmm!

Giddy Tiger - yup yup, finally found that bottle of kaya! my Malaysian colleague told me I could get it from one of the shops in Chinatown, so I went a-hunting for it. there’s also pandan flavour, but I’d much prefer the Original, but of course!
princess appearl - it’s a DATE!! shall I order some pork knuckles for the special occasion? or go straight for tiramisu dessert?
the chairs are sturdier than they look! top part made of wood too, not plastic. can hold you and your bum up kaw-kaw, no worries!! KKKKK!

Nice table …. eating roti bakar at the table now ???
I absolutely love the roti bakar you can get from Ipoh - but I don’t remember which shop. And also one particular shop in Singapore - which I also forgot =(
I better start loving gingko biloba since my memory is failing …
Not roti canai with half-boiled eggs ah?
the roti bakar seem nice but not with butter..
It’s almost 2 a.m. here but.. feeling hungry just looking at the roti bakar la..
Happy Weekend, May.
I still have a tub of Kaya somewhere in my fridge from Don’t Know When! LOL!!.. Hmm, maybe I should toast up some bread, and finally use up that Kaya, eh?

I like the dining set
Looks cool
I thought it was nyonya kaya then only I realized it was nona kaya
Heh heh heh
Roti bakar has to be the olden day coffee shop homemade bread with kaya and butter
Yummy!!!

Wah got table already!!! some more for 3 ppl!! no worries I only got me, myself and I…when is the invitation for a nice dinner cook by you???? and wah roti bakar yummy!!! but me think the kaya bought from here no taste nice lah..the ones in Malaysia so much more better!!
nice pieces of dining set! I got most of my home furniture from Freedom too! I quite like their design. Oh god, food here too, can someone just bury me with fooood pls? YUM YUM! (^_^)
Very stylish!
Why one person need a 5-piece dining set? Cannot buy 3-pc meh?
Aaah! Kaya Toast! That’s what we call it in Singapore. I like to eat this too. Kaya is so yummy!!!
Nice dining table..
Kaya toast.. yum yum!
Will you get so desparate as in toast the bread in your bbq pit to make it hionghiong tei.. and make your own kaya?
LOL LOL LOL. aiyoh….emmm, i will try. LOL.
Roti bakar… classic but still nice to eat! Mix with half boiled eggs lagi best!
velverse - we can play masak-masak anytime! what’s more important is what I have in the kitchen to play masak-masak. when coming over to play har?
kyh - choc spread? like nutela? that’s so yum! fruit jam is ok by me, funny how I’m not a fan of it though once in a blue moon I just need my jam fix. strawberry does it!
moz - actually, I ate my roti bakar over the sink — saves having to sweep the crumbs off later! haha! I’m such a lazy girl!
the same shop that serves the authentic Ipoh white coffee has pretty good roti bakar too. not sure about the Singapore one. you might want to ask for roti bakar campur ginko biloba next time!
Chook-A-Doodle - that one kenot get here wor! so disappointed! not the fresh ones anyway. must buy those frozen roti canai and make my own half-boiled eggs. where got syok leh…
ah nel - eh, the butter is what makes the roti bakar so yum!!
Jemima - I get that too, cravings in the wee hours of the night, looking at food photos! someone mentioned half-boiled eggs and I almost have half a mind to make some now. my laziness got the better of me though, so I’m staying in bed… heheh! Happy Weekend, my dear!
L B - you took back that tub of kaya from your last trip to KL, remember? omg, you still have it?! I hope it hasn’t expired yet! you even took back 2 small tubs! KKKKK! ok, you make the roti bakar, I’ll set up a game of Scrabble… YAATTAAAA!!
ehon - sure Adelaide boh kaya? your part of Chinatown needs to keep up with the times! how many bowls of assam laksa will you trade for my bottle of kaya?
yea, the place is pretty much complete now! all essentials in place. now just to spiff it up a bit with unnecessary items. maybe another lamp… hmmmm…
Selby - the perfect combination for sure! I see you have your gado-gado platter up. good job, and fast too! thanks for submitting homework!
eve - the longer you wait, the tastier it gets! are you gonna wait for a little while longer before indulging in some?
Pinkelle - I wanted to make some nice pasta for my first meal on the table, but after assembling it I was all tired, so just had soup and rolls instead… lol! good enough for me. did you have your roti bakar fix?
bkworm - yea, the table looked modern and sleek, that’s why I chose it over Ikea’s. quality not so good though… *frown*
Wennnn - waaaaa, I’m so honoured you took time off from making BB and watching YATTAAAA to do this tag! I’m not a fan of petai, but I’ll take those prawns anytime! yummm… thanks for doing the tag!
Yvy - no wor, I bought the kaya from Chinatown! there’s this grocery shop that stocks this, and a pandan flavoured one as well. hmmm… you could try bringing in kiam hu, just declare it at customs. worst case scenario, they’ll just bin it! you just have to be prepared for that loss… *grin*
_butt - you wouldn’t believe how often I measured that tiny corner of my lounge and checking out the dimensions of tables, just to make sure I had enough space left around it! almost gave up, then decided to just settle for this slightly-bigger-than-preferred table. didn’t turn out too bad, eh?
zeroimpact - hahaha, I swear I almost thought it was nyonya kaya too, when you mentioned it! I don’t recall seeing this brand on the shelves back home, do you? wish they had the Hainanese bread here too, that’d make it all perfect!
yen chiew - looks like everyone here’s a fan of roti bakar! something we all grew up eating, hor? I’m so looking forward to tomorrow morning so I could have my roti bakar… lol!
Monkticon - yes, YES! that’s absolutely yum! definitely my breakfast menu for Saturday morning, with a cup of Ipoh white coffee. perfect-o!
Nicole - actually it’s for 4, but since i put it up against the wall, I took away one of the dining chairs and put it in my room instead. the kaya in Malaysia is definitely much better! especially the fresh ones that need to be consumed within a couple of weeks. these here have more preservatives since they go on the shelves for a longer time. not as nice, but have no other choice wor…
doreen - uh-huh, Freedom carries quite nice furniture. this wasn’t as well made as I thought it was though, one of the legs already have bits of rust on it! argh! maybe that’s why it costs less than the other tables… heheh!
Kunstemaecker - hey, long time no see, K-man! gotta keep up with the Jones, as they say… *wink*
eastcoastlife - it’s so that when you come for dinner, you have a proper place to sit and have a meal with me! 3-piece is ok too, but this came as a 5-piece set. besides, the chairs are stackable if I need to save space, no worries there.
kaya toast = roti bakar = yummm!
zara’s mama - thank you! I could just imagine your two girls at the table, eating some roti bakar! I think I’d go for toasting the bread in the bbq pit, but not making my own kaya… too much effort!! lol! I’ll just ask someone to risk it and send a small tub over!
qee@ticks - try only ka? aiseh, I thought if I go back you’ll be there to greet me with open arms wan… *grin*
Kenny Ng - yup yup! Monkticon mentioned it too. how did I miss the half-boiled eggs the first time? must have for tomorrow morning!
the butter make me lao sai worr!!!
*pinch nose*
*give pou jai yuen and lots of toilet roll to ahnel*
the kaya make me… very happy worr!!! XD
cannot crawl underneath the table cos occupied by ah boy liao.. kkkkkkk…
i love that song up there. ‘if i had you’. *float float in office*
yeah lor! stupid hor Adelaide Chinatown. I actually considered making them once, but aiyo, i super lazy. HAHAHAHA! Hmm.. *count count* Eh, I thought it’s supposed to be the other way round? How many KAYA you willing to exchange for a bowl of assam laksa?! Hehehe!
Oh, tomorrow I get Mee Soto!!
:D
I am still hunting for 5 places to do your tag!! I’ve already found 2 fantastic places! A lot of them I think don’t really deserve to be mentioned.
Although good but ntg to rave about. Haihs!
Why u need so much lamp?! Haiyooo..
i wanna enjoy my roti bakar on your dining table can ar?
hmmm, i think i have roti bakar photo in my cam too.. let me see see…
like your new dining set… simple, nice, neat.
ah nel - butter make you lao sai? you lactose intolerant ka? margarine also can kwa…
plink - kaya also makes me very happy! LOL! I could just imagine you jumping up and down with glee after a few spoonfuls of kaya!
Chen - my table big enough for the both of you. and Liucas too. and maybe Winn. tea party?
misti - glad you like it! it’s one that you could wind down to, let it play in the background, and lull you into relaxation.
ehon - actually hor, there are eateries here that serves pretty good assam laksa! my aunt here makes assam laksa, but only once in a blue moon. I still like the authentic Penang version though. mmmm, mouth watering just thinking about it!
you can do Part 1 with your two places, and then Part 2 when you’ve found the rest. that’s what I did, heheh!
didn’t quite get the lamp I wanted, haven’t had the time to go lamp-shopping. nice mah, those Japanese paper lamps…
nyonyapenang - of course can! I make 2 roti bakar sets for you, fresh wan!
carcar - do you? show show! let’s have a roti bakar showcase on our blogs. yummmm.
The table is nice. But I dont like glass top tables nor those marble ones. Anything that make loud clink clank noise tops also i dun like. See thru lagi jialat, lolz.
Samm - yea, I’d prefer a wooden one as well, but the ones here are either way too big or too expensive (good wood). can’t afford it! but what helps is using placemats on the glasstop, so it doesn’t make too much sound. mine’s frosted glass, so kenot see kaki wan… and anything else underneath… *grin*
Repaying my long overdue TAG!
