pop hits way back when…

I’ve been tagged once upon a time by CutiePie on hit songs when I was 18. And just yesterday, I was reminded by L B that I have yet to fulfill that tag! Nothing like a double whammy to get things going, eh?

The Rules
1 Go to www.popculturemadness.com
2 Select the year you turned 18
3 Get all nostalgic over the songs of the year
4 Write about it
5 Pass this tag onto 5 others

Now, I must admit that upon looking at the list of songs that topped the charts when I turned 18, I didn’t know 3 of the 10 greatest hits. What?! How could that be? I actually had to download K7, RuPaul and Dr. Dre to see if their songs were one of those I’ve heard before but just never knew the title. But nuh-uh, I didn’t know them at all. Nuthin’ But a “G” Thang had a familiar twang to it, but… no clanging bells either. Oh well… I guess they didn’t appeal to me then, and after listening to them awhile ago, I knew why! LOL!

So, what hits did I know and like from the list?

1. What Is Love - Haddaway
2. Come Baby Come - K7
3. Hero - Mariah Carey
4. In The Still Of The Night (I’ll Remember) - Boyz II Men
5. Have I Told You Lately - Rod Stewart
6. Can’t Help Falling In Love - UB40
7. Dreamlover - Mariah Carey
8. Supermodel (You Better Work) - RuPaul
9. Nuthin’ But a “G” Thang - Dr. Dre
10. Cryin’ - Aerosmith

Mariah Carey, but of course! Boyz II Men! Aerosmith! They were the “in thing” way back then. I was such a pop-song fan. Used to love listening to their songs over the radio (never owned a CD player then, poor me… no Uncle Joe either). Rod Stewart’s Have I Told You Lately was a classic even my parents loved. And who could forgo UB40’s remake of Elvis Presley’s oh-so-famous hit, with a little bit of reggae thrown into it?

Now I’ve gotta figure out a way to stop Haddaway from singing in my mind… So the disco…

what is love
baby don’t hurt me
don’t hurt me
no more…

Oh, I know!! I’ll just pass the groove on to…
angel
Ah Boy (for turning 18 in dog years)

ehon- When I was 18, I listen to …

  21. L B  |  May 16th, 2007 3:00 am

  22. Simple American  |  May 16th, 2007 4:40 am

Where in the heck was I when you are 18? I only remember a couple of those songs. Oh well. Guess I am too much of a headbanger back then. Only recall Aerosmith and Rod Stewart.

What song did you really like when you are 18?

  23. May  |  May 16th, 2007 7:52 am

Will - 5 HUGS - you don’t like RuPaul? (s)he’s quite groovy liao! tall, long hair, errr… big pouty lips… kkkkk!
Ah Boy can do this tag wan! he’s way past 18 in dog years mah. almost as old as me, in fact!

    kyh - 3 HUGS and waiting…

    princess appearl - 1 HUG… jom, we go joget! *boogie on down… down… down…*

kyh - ah, ’tis the season of the R&B grooves! just like now it’s all what I call “angst pop” — a little too weird, trying to be rock, a little alternative, tries too hard and ends up being bad pop, LOL! the 80’s pop was best! like my CDs? thank you! *happy grin*

misti - classic hor, that song. I like this version better than the original, this one’s from MTV Live. a little more soul put into it. shall we karaoke?

Chen - 1 dog year = 7 human years. so if Ah Boy 3.5 years, he is… *calculates on fingers…* waaaa, 25 liao!! tai kor jai oredi, your Ah Boy!! so you calculate backwards, how many human years would it be if Ah Boy was 18 in dog years? minus… minus… *whips out calculator*
7? it’s always been 18! *pretends to whistle* you eat too much sotong maybe!

Selby - yea, there were a lots of memories behind them. but they’re more like flashbacks now. not one big memory that stands out in particular for these. there were a few other songs that tugged at my heart strings more…

  24. ehon  |  May 16th, 2007 7:58 am

  29. Kikare  |  May 16th, 2007 5:48 pm

i know even fewer songs from your list, even though it’s just a few years apart from my 18!
i stopped listening music according to the charts anymore, i suppose. i follow my ears and my trusted friends’ recommendations more.

  30. helen  |  May 16th, 2007 6:20 pm

Oh Oh, I only know 2 or 3 songs from your list. Definitely different era.. lol

  34. Jemima  |  May 17th, 2007 12:20 am

    hmmmm….. Maybe I haven’t born yet. hehehe….

  38. consuela  |  May 17th, 2007 4:58 pm

Haddaway’s song really sticks in your head ehh? When I first heard it…I hated it but after awhile I started to get used to it until it was beyond unbearable because it was so overplayed at my then-ex’s workplace [TGIF Fridays]

I know almost all in that list with the exception of K7. I didn’t know Rupaul could even sing…he/she used to host its own talk show…

Mariah and Boys 2 Men will always be favorite hits :)

  39. ehon  |  May 18th, 2007 12:24 am

  41. May  |  May 19th, 2007 5:13 pm

rinnah - those were her hits! her later ones weren’t all that great to me. now now, don’t get any funny ideas… kkkkk!

ben - waaaa, you Karaoke King liao! jom, we sing duet for “One Sweet Day”!

Pink Cotton - LOLOL!! you’re spot on! how you know he don’t listen to Snoop Dog leh?

Paris Beaverbanks - and you sure did! thanks for being a sport and finishing up quickly. now I have another person on my list who’s fun to tag… *wink*

cp - Janie’s Got a Gun, you mean? Jenny? siapa to? LOL! I also downloaded those songs I didn’t know. some are ewwww in my opinion, which was probably why I didn’t know them in the first place!

Will - yes, that’s the one I missed! I had that at the tip of my tongue but just couldn’t remember. summore what songs got “dog” in it ah?

Giddy Tiger - remember their End of the Road song? that was a “killer” — overplayed until killed! heheh! but it’s still a good tune.

Chook-A-Doodle - yea, and it’s not the Pisang Mas size, it’ll be the Delmontes! hahaha!

moz - which is good, in a way! don’t be a groupie like me. you’re unique. so what songs are you into?

L B - Top 1 I know, Top 2 I don’t know either, so you’re not that bad! KKKKK! I had to download that one and I disliked it. better stick to Mariah and Rod, and the Boyz. it was a fun tag! Shoo Bop de Doo Bop de Eel Pop!

SA - I think I was still in kindy, heheh! what song did I really like? I can’t remember, actually. the songs listed are mostly what I listened to, but I can’t recall if I had one particular favourite. memory loss…

ehon - so how many anniversaries of turning 16 have you celebrated? LOL! I used to want to celebrate anniversaries of turning 29, but I realised that that anniversary number would one day catch up with the age… not too good! be my Hero. take some years off me, please!

Gallivanter - HELLO and WELCOME! ahhh, you’re a smart one, aren’t you? *grin* hope to see more of you around!

liucas - Ah Boy older than 18 lah, but I think you still older than him by a few dog years. so you’re his Tai Kor!! and a very very hensem one at that too! KKKKK!

  42. May  |  May 19th, 2007 5:25 pm

eve - yes, yes I did, finally!! yesterday, the last day of the week before no post on weekend. waaaaaa, kad Raya summore, I very honoured liao! LOL! will be doing a post soon… *wink*

doreen - it sure was. after awhile, they kinda played it to the death, though. I’ve downloaded and listened to it a couple of times, it’s not too bad, after not having heard that song for a long time. now? I don’t have any particular favourites, but I go for more adult artists like Sting. he rocks!

Kikare - the only time I listen to current chart hits would be on the radio, I almost don’t download any unless I find it really really nice. I listen to quite a bit of indie music, which is a refreshing change.

helen - s’ok, you listen now and we’ll be in the same era! gedit? LOL!!

Pinkelle - wakakakakaka! I finally got rid of it after 2 days. now that you mentioned it again, it’s back… argh!

Monkticon - definitely the best, those 80’s and 90’s! maybe it’s because those are the years I was doing some “soul searching” and music helped shaped my opinions… waaaa, so deep!

Samm - good taste, good taste! ask your hubby to sing to you now lah. not too late!

Jemima - oooh, really? is that a better version? I’ve gotta download it and compare. Van Morrison’s a good artist. thanks for the recommendation!

kat - no wor, this is more of a reminder to do your tag… haha! just like how LB reminded me to do this one too!

ah nel - that one also klasik. what episode is Dr Dre at? 51?

eastcoastlife - I think so too! you’re a Hot Young Mama! I’m beginning to feel my age now… *sigh*

consuela - I don’t know K7 either, even if that tune was just vaguely familiar. I think I’ll just stick to those that I could sing without feeling like I’m in a disco! seems like there are loads of Mariah fans here!

ehon - yes, you YOUNG’UN! you so young! I feel… so old… *sob*
it’s getting colder here too, about 20ºC during the day sometimes. I’m putting on more layers as well, but still not cold enough to wear really warm stuff. kinda in between, which sucks ‘cos you’re either too cold or too hot if you don’t wear / wear knit!

Yvy - yes yes, YES! I hereby add one more person to my tag. you’re TAGGED! whee!

  43. Ah Boy  |  May 20th, 2007 1:07 am

  46. May  |  May 26th, 2007 10:11 am

Ah Boy - you’re such a sport! at least you listen to Engrish doggy songs. Chen didn’t make you listen to chingchong songs meh? *pat pat*

zara’s mama - not all that young leh! I went and looked at the others who did this tag, and they all lagi young! I’m beginning to feel like an oldie… *sigh*

_butt - I actually prefer that song to Hero sometimes! it’s got a nice beat to it. UB40’s version was what got me listening to the original Elvis Presley. both are equally cool in their own ways.

  47. […] 3. mistipurple ( O P E N ) ~ Eighteen’s Greatest Hits 4. may (The Birthday Girl kenas!) ~ pop hits way back when… 5. _butt (I looked hard at the stars, and what’s left of the moon..) ~ greatest hits and the […]
