5 yumyum luplups part 1
It’s been a couple of weeks since L B tagged me with his Five Yum Yum Sup Sups, with a list of Albie Yum Yum Favourite Places™ for munch. Since then, I’ve been on a mission to find my own Yum Yum Sup Sup favourites in Sydney, which was a bit of a hard deal since I hadn’t spent much time to go food-hunting.
Ah, but luck struck! I found two places which I know I’ll frequent in the future, not because I have no where else to go (like a convenient but so-so place for lunch), but because they really do serve yummy-licious food which you just can’t resist.
May I present, Part I of Little Miss May©’s Yum Yum Lup Lups.
The rules:
1. Add a direct link to your post below the name of the person who tagged you.
Include the state and country you’re in.
Nicole (Sydney, Australia)
velverse (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
LB (San Giovanni in Marignano, Italy)
may (Sydney, Australia)
2. List out your top 5 favorite places to eat at your location.
3. Tag 5 other people (preferably from other countries/states)
[..and let them know they’ve been tagged]

#1: Marigold Restaurant, Haymarket, Sydney
I finally got the chance to go yumcha on Friday with my colleagues at Marigold, the restaurant which I’ve been itching to go ever since I came back to Sydney. This is the only one other yumcha places which serves great dimsum, authentic Hong Kong style. The harkaus and siewmais are absolutely to die for! As are their charsiew buns, egg tarts, sweet sesame balls and steamed pork ribs. Though their version of lormaikai is actually our KL version of horyipfann instead (sorry to disappoint, LB). If you’re ever looking for a good dimsum spread in the city, this is it.

#2: Chinese Noodle Restaurant, Haymarket, Sydney
Although the sign outside the eatery says Chinese Noodle Restaurant, my colleagues seemed to have dubbed it Northern Noodle House, as that’s what the chinese characters say. All their noodles are fresh and handmade, which makes this place quite unique. I was there for lunch this afternoon, and couldn’t resist ordering their fried noodles with seafood, as well as a dozen of their fried pork and chives dumplings. They’re generous helpings so I ate only half, and packed the rest home for dinner! Waste not, want not. It was almost as if I was back there eating again. All that’s missing was a nice hot cup of Chinese tea to go with it…
So, what’s for part II? Don’t know yet. I’ll go for another hunt these couple of weeks and let you know what I find!

que tics - 5 HUGS and five egg tarts for you! australeeahh is always interesting, especially now there’s me in it, LOL! the weekend wasn’t wet enough for me, just a light drizzle. no Songkhran festival here. maybe just in my bathroom, yea?
Wennnn - 3 HUGS and three baskets of harkau for you! I wait for you at Marigold, we go morning yumcha. if you get there first, reserve a spot for me and make sure they’re steaming fresh siewmai…
L B - 1 HUG and a fresh basket of lotus rice for you! yumcha would definitely be on the list of makan-makan spots I’ll take you, cannot not go wan! we can BYO tiramisu for dessert, ok? make extra and we’ll save some for Ah Boy and Liucas too.
better late than never in submitting homework! this was an interesting one, which is my excuse to food-hunt and eat more anyway… LOL! *HUGS & SMOOCHIES*
Selby - alamak, a few minutes late… but nevermind, like you said, Part II coming up in the future. always more posts for you to chup!

mmm… must find a victim to go dim-sum with me already.
*sulk at bread at tea*
how can they name the horyipfan as lormaikai when it’s not made with lormai?!
hmmmm looking at the pictures makes me wanna make dumplings again - if only i have the time!
ah may you’re so lucky to be in sydney! got a decent choice for asian food ya?
Dim sum!

Dim sum!
I want to eat dim sum
Now I’m thinking dim sum for supper
*lau hau sui* gero~
The dim sum looks so Malaysia

The horyipfann looks good, I presume it tasted nice too?
The handmade noodles looks equally delicious..
Although I just came back from dinner, now I’m hungry again..
cham loh !!!!
Phhewww! Luckily I baru finished dinner!
But I sure wouldn’t mind some of those egg tarts now.
The dim sum looks delicious.
wonder whether it taste as good as it looks
Ooh, you’re making me miss the yummylicious food in Sydney! I recommend the roast duck rice from BBQ King on Goulburn St, dimsum at East Ocean in Haymarket and the Sydney Fish Market!
Happy eating!
This one I tried before oso !!!!
But I nearly always go to Golden Century … althought the queue is quite impossible !
wah` dim sums and dan tarts!!!
syiokss *go yum cha with may~ *
Another food post… lucky I’m not hungry now!
Yo, find somethin’ ‘Sydney’ for us!! Haha!
The noodles look like lai meen, no?
*Food Hugs*
Har kau! Pai kuat! Siew mai!
How did you manage to take pixes in front of your colleagues without appearing err…strange??
sigh… so many ppl blog about food or put pics of food up …. and mostly i cant eat due to my vege diet for now…
everytime a certain kind of food appears in blogland, i subconsciously go look for it during lunch and dinner. of cos the standard of the food court’s different, but will do lah. i think i will start my dim sum crave again.
Shucks! Its 1.35am now..and looking at those dimsum is really torturing. ArrrrgggghhhhhH!!!!!!!!!!!!
jimbo - it’s all your fault! hahaha! I really didn’t remember it as Northern Noodle House, even though I’m sure I’ve been there before many years ago. jom lunch!
Nicole - this is part I, that’s why only two for now… and also ‘cos I can’t think of the other three yet, so part II will come up when I find something good! didn’t try the hak lor mai, was too full. next time we go yumcha and order ok? ya lor, blame it on jimbo for calling it Nothern Noodle House! kakakakakaka!
moopig - I was looking for victims to go yumcha myself, when suddenly my colleagues suggested it. stroke of luck! didn’t have to order all by myself and then tapau home again. *passes you some harkau to make you smile*
Kikare - I’m not too sure why they called it lormaikai either. didn’t taste anything like it, nor like lormaifann either. more like bakchang, except wrapped with lotus leaves. ooooh, you make your own dumplings? I wanna learn to make harkau!! they have those little bamboo steamers on sale here, so if I could just buy the skin, add in the marinated prawns, steam them… yummmmmm! I wanna go yumcha again! lots of decent asian food here. almost like being back home. almost…
zeroimpact - dimsum for supper is great! do a Kikare and make your own dumplings. I want to learn too, then I could have harkau anytime I want.
Monkticon - watch that drool now, it’s all over the screen… did you lick it?! LOL!
Mmmm….looks gorgeous…sorry I have been uncommunicative of late-no comments etc-I’m just recovering from a lot of stuff at the moment. Take care darling and enjoy the adventures in Sydney.
So far.. how to try leh? send some back ya
y no carrot cake keh?
aiiii? all chinese food keh? u must miss home a lot *hugzzz*
*Note to self* Never read food posts on an empty stomach *growl* Now I wanna eat dimsum
Wah.. the man who does the ramen wears a shower cap just like his colleagues back in China do! Sure very sedap already like that.
And the dim sum pix.. yummy yummy!
wah…. sure looks delicious in the photos! guess it’s even more delicious in reality!
so happy food hunting!!!
i only know how to make the pork and chives ones, not har kau! i believe the har kau skin is the trickest part, because you need to make it thin and kinda chewing at the same time. oh well since you have such easy access to asian food, you really don’t need to make them yourself.
nowhere is really like home, but food can compensate a lot! then, it’s up to you to make the new place your home, and you seem to be doing that quite well!
Hi May,
Makes me miss Sydney oh so much. Back in Uni days, every week, my housemates and I must have lunch at the northern noodles restaurant. Check out this place in Manly that serves wonderful ribs called ribs and rump.
yummy-licious .. anymore left?
Oooooo….good!!! now i can go too. WE can go together-gether!!
Nah, your cup of hot chinese tea. teheehee…
I had a dim sum craving on Friday afternoon, and was supposed to go yum cha on Saturday, but it didn’t happen… now looking at your foodie post I really must go yum cha this weekend!
Slllluuurrrpppppppppppppp. ILIKE!!!!!
mc D in aust? kfc in aust leh? ;p hehee i like their kfc fries! oh n the kebab!yummilicious.
cant wait for part 2!!! kiki hungry for makan liao !! hehe shes waiting for u to bring her out makan
oh lomaikai in singapore also like hor yip faan. not nice.
err, ok.. diff taste
btw, nice song.
Chen - I’m sure what you meant to say was… the dimsum in Malaysia looks so Hong Kong! ‘cos this restaurant serves HK dimsum… kkkkk!
the horyipfann actually tasted quite nice, similar to the ones we have back home. in fact, everything tastes similar, except they have that much more “fresh” taste to it too, if you know what I mean. the prawns are crunchier, the meat not “sou”, and flavours are magnified.
lots of different ways how they cook that handmade noodles, I wanna go back for more! just had sushi for dinner and now I’m hungry again… jom, we go noodle house for supper, ok? Ah Boy, come drive us there! I buy you one big plate of noodles!
king’s wife - baru finished dinner doesn’t stop me from wanting to bite into a harkau… lol! especially freshly made ones. and egg tarts too. these were super good. have a bite! say “aahhhhh….”
jo - it really did! I think it might’ve tasted even better than it looked. there were so many other varieties which we didn’t have enough space in our tummies to try. next round, next round!
Pinkelle - WELCOME, my dear! did you used to study or work in Sydney too? food here is quite fab if you know where to find it, hor?
BBQ King, I know that one!! very good liao. I think I’ll go there this Sunday for lunch. the fish market is also a must for the freshest salmon to make sashimi. I could just taste it in my mouth now… *licks lips* *swallows saliva*
moz - I’m sure you did! aren’t you wishing you were here right now? *evil giggle* where’s Golden Century ah? I don’t recall going there. it was always either Marigold or Regal, which are both part of the same company anyway.
ben - dantart my favourite sweet dimsum dessert! I could whack in 2 of those at one go. but I had to keep my composure and not look like a glutton in front of my colleagues… KKK! jom yumcha soon!
princess a - lucky you, but unlucky for me that I should be slightly hungry right now and thinking back to that yumcha. aisehhh, I’m so wanting a bite of that harkau! yea, the noodles are actually “lai meen” of sorts, but not quite the same as the one in Dragon-i. this one chewier wor.
you want something ‘Sydney’? how about some rump? or pie? hmmmm, actually I’m not really sure what is truly ‘Sydney’. not like how assam laksa is so Penang, or porky pie is so London. must find something…
kat - pssssst… one of them (who didn’t join us) is just as bad, she takes photos for her foodblog as well! and I think they’re used to it by now. I think they’re quite amused too… *grin*
zewt - ahhhh, but your vege diet isn’t going to be forever, right? not to worry, soon you’ll be enjoying all that yummy dimsum and porky stuff again! and fried chicken! I suddenly thought of KFC, dunno why…
misti - actually that’s what I do too, sometimes. especially when you know you could get it easily! just around the corner, at some noodle shop, or a small restaurant, without much hassle. but if it’s something heavy like steak, I’d have to sit on it till the weekend or when I’m so hungry I could eat a cow. *moos mournfully*
Chook-A-Doodle - that’s when you cook maggi mee to satisfy hunger pangs! I miss BKT. haven’t found a place that does good BKT here yet. that’ll be a mission for me!
Jane Sunshine - hello my dear! I’ve missed you, but I totally understand. *pat pat* take your time in recovery and don’t worry too much, ok? I’ll always be here, ready and waiting with my arms wide open! wish I could give you a real hug to make things better. sending you a virtual one for now… * H U G S *
JL - I think I’ll kena fine by customs for sending perishable food out of Sydney liao! I wonder if I could risk asking someone to send me some BKT sachets, though. shall I?
ah nel - didn’t have time and stomach space to eat lohbakgou wor. summore didn’t see the lady with the cart. I wonder if she was avoiding our table on purpose?
me - wakakakaka! eating Chinese food here is almost like eating it at home. so much Asian variety to choose from here. I miss home-cooked food more than the restaurant ones, that’s for sure.
Paris Beaverbanks - now you’re making me even more hungry! my tummy growled when I read that yours was at the same time, LOL!
zara’s mama - he does, doesn’t he? so typical China small-time chef, but these are the best ones in town! I bet if you put him in a proper starched uniform, he’d be so uncomfortable i it… nothing like t-shirt and shower cap!
kyh - seriously good stuff. need to go a-hunting in the next couple of weeks. wanna tag along?
Kikare - yes oh yesssss, the skin!! nice and thin, yet moist and chewy. it’s amazing how they could come up with something so… so… *speechless* hahaha! you know what I mean. it’s just so unique. I’m craving for it again. what’s your pork and chives recipe? make a batch and blog, please! I wanna learn!
Caroline Chan - waaaaa! hello hello, my dear friend! how’ve you been? and hubby? and WeiWei? I’m missing all of you, especially all the food gatherings you’re gonna have!
yes, I think I went with you lot once to that nothern noodle restaurant at one point in time, that’s how I remember that place. Ribs & Rump? ooooh, it’s a date!
cp1 - none for this round, but plenty of next rounds to come! you joining me? more people, more orders, more variety… *grin*
p.s. how was your meet up?!
Yvy - yes, we most certainly can go togeder-geder! I’m always looking for kaki to go makan-makan. sometimes a bit hard to ajak colleagues since I don’t know them that well (except jimbo, but he never eats, pahhh!). bila balik?
Hijackqueen - thank you! just the right fragrant jasmine tea. *sips*
rinnah - yes yes, yumcha is a must. I think it’s the best kind of food that the Chinese have come up with! bite sizes, all super easy to eat, can taste a great variety and you could go at it non-stop. yumcha!! yumseng!!
Samm - did you just lick me, or your screen?! wakakakaka! try not to eat my hand too ok!
Winn - all also got! Hungry Jacks too! the KFC fries here aren’t too bad, though I’m still a fan of McD’s fries back home. kebabs are a definite YUM in Sydney. thick and juicy and succulent!
next trip I’ll bring Kiki and Pooch out with me… maybe… don’t want them to end up smelling like the restaurant la, otherwise whole night I’ll be sniffing food! hahaha!
carcar - izzit? I didn’t know that. someone should teach them how to make lormaikai the way we Malaysians do, hor? it would be a hit! phenomenal! I wonder when I’ll be able to eat the real lormaikai… *sigh*
I like this song too… *smile*
I used to stay in Melbourne but made regular trips to Sydney! I miss the good fresh food in Oz *cries* tell us how your trip to the fish market goes and eat a seafood platter for me! And mud crabs, and salmon, prawns, calamari rings and… :p
Kkkk… might be huh..
we tends to Malaysia-nise everything
I can see Ah Boy jumping & running liao when he heard about food !! He cannot resist food leh.. Yeah, he just get his driving license not long ago, he is now a qualified chauffeur liao
Mmmm.. now i dream of har kau..
and the siew loong pau !!

hugs, mayliu.
i wish i wish upon the stars
mayliu won’t take the wrong bus again. nite nite twit twit.
Had hand made noodles in Vancouver last year for the first time. So good and it is fun, not to mention amazing, to watch them make noodles. So fast too.
Yam cha!!! That’s it. I’m going this weekend clear my calendar.
Cool, I like dim sum so much!
flyday mayliu flyday!!! smiles.
good nite ahmay! sweet dreams!
yum yum food pics~!! how have you been dear?
Pinkelle - huarrrr, you regular traveller you! heheh! it must’ve been nice making those trips whenever you could. I wish I had a car to go around too, but since my place doesn’t come with a parking lot, it’s difficult owning one. I might make a trip to the fish market in the next couple of weeks, get some salmon and have fresh sashimi! yum!!
Chen - of course we do that. we aren’t Malaysians if we don’t Malaysian-ise everything! we even Malaysian-ise something Malaysian. that’s the way to go.
yesterday I cooked a rump steak for dinner and I was just thinking how much Ah Boy would’ve enjoyed it! really fresh, yummy beef we have here. I’d make one for him, reduced in salt, of course. mmmmm… goes well with harkau and siew loong pau too…
misti - if the Singapore version tastes anything like the one I described, then it’s definitely not the Real Lormaikai™! you must make a trip up North, even if it’s just to JB, to eat the Real Thing. nothing quite like it. then you won’t have any reason to jump out of the window already, hehehe!
ah nel - you come yumcha with me and I order carrot cake especially for you, want? but must share-share ok, dun eat all by yourself!
cp1 - next round we go for sashimi at the Fish Market! wish I was there at your meeting, must’ve been such a relief that it finally happened, eh? LOL! *winks back*
doreen - HELLO and WELCOME! how nice of you to drop by. are there good yumcha spots in New Zealand too? hop on the plane and come over, let’s go yumcha together!
plink - “fake” lormaikai!! hahahaha! it tasted good nevertheless.
_butt - the egg tarts were yummy! exactly like the ones we have back in KL, so I had no qualms in whacking in 2 of those… kekeke! looking at those pics again makes me want to go yumcha, but only for the harkau and egg tarts. I wonder if I can ta-pau…
Yvy - whee! *marks my calendar*
2nd of June?! aiseh, long long way to go, but will wait patiently for that day to arrive. must go on a really long food quest when you’re back!
misti - ‘tomorrow’ is here already, and so was the day after, and now it ’s the day after after after! sorry it took me so long to get back to these comments. all is well. and I’ll always make sure there’s a bus going back my way if I take the wrong one, LOL!! *HUGS*
SA - they’re the experts in making those noodles. just so amazing how the noodles don’t break into pieces when they stretch and pull and whack them on the table, hor? like magic! take me go yumcha too!
~TheAngel~ - I love dimsum too, because we get to eat little bits of everything, especially if you go in a large enough group. even 2 people is decent. one person… sapu everything… waaa, pau sei lor!
misti - Sunday! Sunday! Good Morning, mistiliu!! *smiles happily* *skips around*
J - I’ve been ok, then grumpy, then moody, then better now. and long time no see you too! always so nice to have you pop by when you have the chance. take care, ok? hope to hear from you again, soon, and more regularly! *hugs*
Still have not gone yumcha!
SA - did you manage to go over the long Memorial Day weekend? hope you did… yumcha is best!
